Although only 19 years old, has
been serving his country in various
capacities sinco the outbreak of war.
While working in Messrs Morrison
and Bearby's engineering works, he '
was a Sergeant in tho Carrington
-Senior Cadets. This company was
mobilised on August 26th, 1914,
and stationed at Nobby's, New
castle. After being there 6 weeks
he was promoted to Corporal in
charge of the engine room, and serv
ed altogether nine months. Tho
company was disbanded and orders
issued that no one was to enlist.
Four months afterwards applica
tions were called for engineers to ,
bring the Royal Australian Engln- ' '
eers up to war establishment. Ten
applications were received from
Newcastle, and Stanley was the only
successful applicant. He then serv
ed 4 i months at Fort Scratchly,
Newcastle, when an order was issued
that 50 per cent, of the company
would bo allowed to enlist in the
Field Engineering Company. Stan
ley read the order on Friday, was
home and got his parents' consent
on Saturday, and was enrolled in
Sydney on the following Monday,
in the 9 th Company of Field En
gineers. A.I.F. When opportunity
offered he made application for the
position of despatch rider to his
company (4tli). The members of
the family have purchased a war
Service Model 'DoUglas' motor
cycle, fully equipped and presented
it to him. He will be in charge of
the cyclists (8) of his company.
