Hedera bridges private institutional DLT networks (like HashSphere or enterprise Hyperledger Fabricdeployments) onto its public mainnet primarily through the Hedera Consensus Service (HCS). [1]
This hybrid architecture allows institutions to maintain strict data privacy on their internal systems while inheriting the tamper-proof security and finality of a public ledger. [1, 2, 3]
The bridge operates through a multi-step process:
1. Private Transaction Isolation
The institution handles all sensitive data, private user identities, and business logic inside its own enclosed permissioned network. No raw institutional data ever leaves this environment or enters the public realm. [1, 2, 3]
2. Message Hashing
When a transaction occurs internally, the private DLT generates a cryptographic hash (a unique digital fingerprint) of the transaction data. This hash proves the data exists and has not been altered, but hides the actual information. [1, 2, 3]
3. Public HCS Submission
The private network automatically submits this hash as a message to a designated HCS Topic ID on the public Hedera mainnet. To ensure control, the institution protects this topic using a
submitKey, ensuring only authorized private nodes can send messages to it. [1, 2]4. Decentralised Ordering and Timestamping
The public Hedera mainnet nodes process the submitted hash using the Hashgraph Consensus Algorithm. The network assigns the hash a fair, immutable consensus timestamp and a definitive sequence number within seconds. [1, 2, 3]
5. Settlement and Verification
The public ledger records the sequenced hash into a permanent public record. The institution's private DLT can then pull this sequenced event back via a Mirror Node to update its internal state. Anyone needing to audit the company can compare the private data against the public timestamped hash to verify its authenticity without accessing the private database. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Alternative: The Proxy Token Mechanism
For financial institutions transferring assets, Hedera also utilizes a proxy token mechanism. For example, when balancing Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) on a private network, the public ledger handles a "proxy" representation. This permits cross-institution liquidity and tracking on the public network without exposing the actual currency or balance details from the private network. [1]
